Should I Get a Crown?

Over 20 million Americans have at least one crown. Crowns can cover a multitude of issues, but they are not for every dental issue. Here are some details about what our dentist uses crowns for.

What Is a Crown?

Crowns can be made of several materials. The most common type is a porcelain crown, which consists of layers of porcelain covering a metal cap. The porcelain crown looks much the same as your other teeth, and our dentist can color-match it to your other teeth.

Crowns can also be made of composite resin, which is a type of plastic. While composite crowns are cheaper, they do not last as long as porcelain crowns. You can also opt to get a gold or silver crown. Metal crowns can last a long time, but they are expensive, and many adults want their crowns to blend in with their other teeth.

Who Might Need a Crown?

One of the best things about crowns is that they can solve a number of dental issues. First, our dentist uses crowns to cover and protect a tooth with a large cavity. If you have had a root canal because a large cavity impacted the middle of your tooth (the tooth pulp), you most likely had a crown placed over your tooth when the dentist finished the root canal procedure.

Crowns can also cover damaged teeth. You may have cracked a tooth because you clench or grind your teeth at night or chipped a tooth in an accident. Crowns can both cover and protect the tooth from further injury and restore it to its original shape and size.

Dentists also use crowns to cover discolored teeth. You may have a discolored tooth due to medication or trauma. Cavities and excessive fluoride use can also cause tooth discoloration. In this case, crowns are not used to cover a broken tooth, but instead, the crown is used to restore your beautiful smile.
