Brush Better by Avoiding These Bad Habits

But even the most dedicated brushers can fall into bad habits that can undermine their efforts. Here are some common bad brushing habits to avoid:

Brushing Too Hard

Many people think that brushing harder will clean their teeth better. However, brushing too hard can actually damage your teeth and gums. It can wear away the enamel on your teeth, making them more susceptible to cavities. It can also irritate your gums, leading to gum recession.

Instead of scrubbing your teeth, use a gentle circular motion. You should also use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Brushing Too Short

You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day. However, many people only brush for a minute or less. This isn't enough time to remove all the plaque and bacteria from your teeth.

To make sure you're brushing for long enough, try using a timer. You can also divide your mouth into four sections and brush each section for 30 seconds.

Brushing Immediately After Eating

It's important to brush your teeth after meals to remove food particles and plaque. However, you should wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing. This will give your saliva time to neutralize the acids in your mouth, which can damage your teeth.

Rinsing With Water After Brushing

Many people rinse their mouth with water after brushing. However, this can actually wash away the fluoride in your toothpaste, which helps to protect your teeth from cavities.

Instead of rinsing with water, simply spit out the excess toothpaste.

Using the Wrong Toothbrush

The type of toothbrush you use can make a big difference in how well you clean your teeth. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your mouth. You should also replace your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Not Flossing

Flossing is just as important as brushing for maintaining good oral health. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. You should floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.

Ignoring Your Tongue

Your tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria, so it's important to brush it regularly. You can use your toothbrush or a tongue scraper to clean your tongue.

By avoiding these bad brushing habits, you can improve your oral health and keep your smile healthy for years to come.
